Broker's Comments

The Malö 96 is a yacht that perfectly showcases why Swedish-built cruising boats have earned such a strong reputation amongst experienced sailors. Built by Malö Yachts under Lloyds supervision and originally retained by the builder as a demonstration boat until 1990, she combines quality construction, practical design and genuine offshore capability in an attractive and manageable package. These boats are renowned for their solid feel at sea, comfortable layouts and beautifully crafted interiors, making them a popular choice for sailors seeking a capable cruising yacht with real character.
This particular example benefits from one of the most significant upgrades a prospective buyer could hope to find, with the engine, gearbox and folding propeller all replaced in 2008 with a Volvo Penta D1-30B installation. She is also well equipped for extended cruising and independent living aboard, featuring wind, solar and towing generators alongside a battery monitor, inverter and Mastervolt charging system. The result is a yacht that appears well set up for spending considerable time away from marina facilities.
On deck, the deep and secure cockpit is complemented by a substantial sprayhood and fixed windscreen arrangement which provides excellent shelter and visibility. Prospective purchasers should note that the sprayhood is now showing its age and would benefit from refurbishment or replacement. The full teak decking remains in place and contributes to the yacht's classic appearance, although its condition should be carefully considered by buyers as it is showing significant wear and may require attention in the future. She carries an impressive inventory including three anchors, substantial chain and warp, an Avon inflatable dinghy and a boat cradle which is included in the sale.
The sail inventory offers a range of options for cruising and offshore passage making, including a fully battened mainsail, additional headsails, cruising chute and removable inner forestay. The mainsail appears serviceable, however the roller furling genoa is believed to be at or near the end of its useful life and should be considered non-serviceable for valuation purposes. These factors have been reflected in the asking price and present an opportunity for a new owner to upgrade the sail wardrobe to suit their own plans.
Below decks, the warm mahogany interior creates the welcoming atmosphere for which Malö yachts are particularly admired. Accommodation is arranged to provide comfortable sleeping for up to seven, with a spacious forward cabin, cosy aft double cabin and versatile saloon berths. The practical L-shaped galley, dedicated chart table, Eberspacher heating and plentiful storage make her equally suited to weekend cruising or longer adventures. Overall, she represents an honest example of a highly respected Scandinavian cruiser, offering excellent underlying quality, a valuable engine upgrade and considerable cruising capability, whilst allowing scope for a new owner to address some cosmetic and sail inventory improvements over time.
