Boatshed.com es la primera empresa de barcos que ofrece compras de barcos utilizando bitcoin. Bitcoin es un sistema de pago digital, un sistema de transacciones entre pares inventado en 2008. El sistema utiliza tecnología de cadena de bloques y libros de contabilidad para crear una moneda virtual que es muy segura. Bitcoin ha sido descrita como la primera moneda digital descentralizada y es la más grande de su tipo en términos de valor total de mercado.
Los Bitcoins son divisibles en cantidades más pequeñas, divididas por varios puntos decimales y se denominan multi Bitcoin o micro Bitcoin. Las transacciones que utilizan bitcoins requieren que el comprador y el vendedor de un barco tengan billeteras de bitcoins. Básicamente, la billetera almacena las credenciales digitales de sus tenencias de Bitcoin. Los bitcoins se pueden comprar y vender en línea a través de los intercambios en línea participantes. Bitcoin como moneda está siendo aceptado por cada vez más comerciantes y ahora hay más de 100.000 comerciantes que aceptan bitcoin. Algunas empresas notables que aceptan bitcoins incluyen Amazon, Expedia, Bloomberg, Tesla.
Las transacciones de Bitcoin para la venta de barcos se realizan a través de un software de billetera de monedas. Las transacciones se registran en una base de datos pública distribuida. Esto se conoce como cadena de bloques.
